The original of this chair, based on Chippendale design, was produced by a craftsman in Massachusetts late in the 18th century. The seat was covered with a slip seat in brown needlepoint. The design of the straight leg arm chairs varied only slightly from the typical cabriole leg Chippendale chairs. Carving and ornamentation was usually confined to the splat and top rail. The front legs were often plain or perhaps fluted. Later on in the Chippendale period his designs were influenced by his interest in Chinese decoration as trade began to open with the Chinese mainland. During this period the furniture took on more rectangular lines and the splats of the chairs became intricate exercises in mitering rather than featuring the beautiful ornate carving of the chair we have selected to reproduce in miniature. Chairs of this type were most commonly found in the dining room but were also utilized in many rooms of the home. The survival rate of this type of chair has been extremely high due to their sturdy construction and many remain as solid today as when they were made in the 1700's.
