Chippendale's genius is best exhibited in his chairs. In form, many of his early chairs followed the form of the Queen Anne style very closely, differing only in his use of the cabriole legs with ball-and-claw feet. His early work also relied heavily on the fiddle-shaped splat, the inner vertical portion of the back, but later variations of his chairs used all types of splats. The ball-and-claw foot, which almost conclusively identifies a piece constructed in Chippendale's style, is supposed to have originated in China. The knees of the cabriole legs were usually ornately carved. The top rail of his chairs usually capped the back posts which in turn were continuations of the rear legs. The carving on the top rail often complimented the carving on the front apron of the chair. The shape of the seat of the Chippendale chair evolved from the tapered look of this chair to an almost square seat in later designs, but were always upholstered. Chairs of this type were most commonly found in the dining room but were also utilized in many rooms of the home, at desks, writing tables, or in hallways. The elegance of their rich carving and beautiful upholstery were appreciated wherever they were used.
