Queen Anne, second daughter of James II, ruled England from 1702 until 1714. The furniture style that bears her name, however, covers a period for forty years. The Queen Anne style, developed during this age of flourishing craftsmanship, brought to American furniture great lightness and grace and a new concept of comfort. In America, the furniture was made in a Queen Anne style from about 1725-1750. The American versions were smaller scale than older styles but more substantial than their English counterparts. The Queen Anne was also known as a "tripod" table because of its three feet or legs. The table is in three parts; the tilt top, the pedestal, and legs. The top was made either to tilt, revolve, or remain stationary. The principal differences in tripod tables of the same type are in their size and shape, the presence or absence of carving or inlay and the character of the wood and workmanship. The large ones were generally for afternoon tea with ample space for cups and saucers as well as for the teapot and other accessories, while the smallest table was for holding a candle. The collector series Queen Anne Tilt-Top Table has a plain oval top and cabriole leg. The pedestal is turned inverted vase shape. The feature of the tilt top itself permitted space saving in room decor as well as being quite attractive when the top was in the vertical position.
